Are we still on about hockey?!?

When I had a real job (where I worked with other people) I promised myself that if I ever became self-employed I would listen to talk-radio all the time, mostly due to the fact that at the time I wasn't able to. The kiddie-vinkies always wanted some sort of dance music in the background and didn't like thinking while they worked (although I considered it a personal triumph when I got them hooked on the Tragically Hip!).

Fast-forward (rewind?) to seven years ago up until now and I can happily say that I have been listening to a form of talk-radio almost everyday. There have been days when the right wing rhetoric oozing from the box made me change to my favourite music station CKUA to enjoy jazz or world music or anything not political. For the most part, I keep it tuned to 630CHED*.

Then there are days like today.

Do we really need to interrupt the man talking about raising bison for a news conference about the coaching staff of the Edmonton Oilers? Do we really need to to hear fans Tuesday afternoon quarterbacking (I don't know of a hockey metaphor) for the rest of the day? They started interrupting off and on around 10 am, then again for the news conference around 11:30 am and they were still going on about around 3 pm.

Oh yeah, tonight they will be pre-empting Primeau (the only left-leaning host on CHED) for the hockey playoffs of which we ARE NOT A PART OF. This will lead into the regular sports show (8 till 11 pm nightly).

How much sports do we need?

Slowly, not so quietly, the talk radio that I grew up with has became mostly sports with a side order of right wing propaganda and occasionally, a small mint of leftism to clear the palette between sports and alien abductions.

Yes, yes I know. Change the channel. I have. I will continue to do so but wtf! I need conflict in the background. It inspires me while I work. Hearing about hockey or football or baseball is not conflict. Does this mean I have to start picking fights with the neighbors again?

Aaarrggh!
